British pressure on India to comply with Russian sanctions.
The British Foreign Secretary left for New Delhi to pressure India to comply with sanctions against Russia.
British Foreign Secretary Liz Terrace travels to New Delhi following the Indian government’s refusal to impose Western sanctions on Russia.
According to the Sky News website, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s indifference to the sanctions has prompted Terrace to urge New Delhi to follow suit against Russia and condemn the Ukraine conflict.
During his visit to India, Terrace, in addition to pressuring the Modi government to comply with sanctions against Moscow, also raised other issues, including investing in renewable energy, cooperating in cybersecurity programs and trade.
“Deeper British-Indian relations will strengthen international security and the Indo-Pacific region, and provide jobs and opportunities for both countries,” the British Foreign Secretary said before traveling to India.
“Despite Russia’s unwarranted attack on Ukraine, these relations are becoming even more important and highlight the need for free democracies to work more closely together on defense, trade and cyber security,” Terrace said.
India has relied heavily on arms imports from Russia and has repeatedly refused to vote against Russia at the United Nations.
Following heavy Western sanctions against Moscow, the Modi government agreed this month to buy three million barrels of Russian oil at a special discount.
India’s non-compliance with heavy Western sanctions against Moscow has been troubling since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, to the point that a number of Indian students in Ukraine have also been persecuted by Ukrainian nationalists.
