Biden Does Not Believe Putin Is Thinking Of Using Nuclear Weapons.
US President Joe Biden said in an interview with ABC television that the suspension of Russia’s participation in the “Strategic Offensive Arms Reduction” (New Start) treaty is not a sign of Moscow’s readiness to use nuclear weapons.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced in a message to the Federal Assembly on February 21 that Russia will suspend participation in the Russia-US Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, but emphasized that his country will not withdraw from the treaty, Sputnik news agency wrote.
He pointed out that before returning to the discussion, we should find out for ourselves what countries like France and England still claim and consider their strategic arsenal, the offensive potential of the North Atlantic Alliance as a whole.
Biden said in this interview: This is a big mistake. Not very responsible. But I don’t think he (Putin) is thinking about using nuclear weapons or anything like that.
He continued: There is no indication that this means that they will think about using nuclear weapons and intercontinental ballistic missiles.
Biden also said the United States sees nothing to indicate a change in Russia’s readiness to use its nuclear deterrent.
The agreement between the Russian Federation and the United States on measures to further reduce and limit strategic offensive weapons was signed in Prague (Czech Republic) on April 8, 2010. This agreement replaced the START Treaty of 1991 and, after entering into force, replaced the Strategic Offensive Reductions Treaty concluded in 2002.
