America’s reaction to the meeting of foreign ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia.
The Deputy Spokesperson of the US State Department reacted to the meeting between the Foreign Ministers of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Saudi Arabia at a press conference on Thursday and described it as an “expected step” in the relations between Tehran and Riyadh.
The statements of Vedant Patel, the deputy spokesperson of the US Department of State, came up while the Wall Street Journal had stated in a report on Thursday, quoting anonymous sources, that the normalization of relations between Tehran and Riyadh had angered William Burns, the head of the CIA.
Vedant Patel, the Deputy Spokesperson of the US Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said on Thursday local time about the opinion of the US government regarding the restoration of diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia: The meeting of the foreign ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia (in China) is an expected step in the dialogue process between the two countries.
He claimed: We have long encouraged dialogue and direct diplomacy, including between Iran and its neighboring countries, to help reduce tensions and the risk of conflict.
At the same time, the Deputy Spokesman of the US State Department said in the continuation of Washington’s fear of Iran’s regional influence: If this dialogue leads to concrete measures by Iran to stop its destabilizing activities in the region, including the proliferation of dangerous weapons, of course we welcome it.
This US State Department official continued: Almost 80 thousand American citizens live in Saudi Arabia. It would certainly be welcome if steps were taken by Iran and its neighbors—in this case, Saudi Arabia—to help curb destabilizing actions and provide Americans with greater security against further attacks.
