American citizen admitted in court that he helped North Korea circumvent US sanctions on cryptocurrency services.
The U.S. Department of Justice said in a statement Monday that Virgil Griffith, a U.S. citizen, was plotting to violate the International Economic Emergency Act by providing services to North Korea, including technical advice on the use of cryptocurrencies and China’s blockchain technology. Escape from sanctions has admitted.
The US Department of State added that Griffiths, a cryptocurrency expert, worked in 2018 to provide services to individuals in North Korea and to develop and finance cryptocurrency infrastructure in the country in order to evade US sanctions.
The US Department of Justice claims that Griffith, who lives in Singapore, traveled to North Korea in 2019, despite the US State Department denying him permission to travel to the country.
A statement from the US Department of Justice said Griffiths attended a conference in Pyongyang, North Korea, to provide guidance on how North Korea could use cryptocurrencies and the Chinese blockchain to launder money and prevent US sanctions.
