Algeria: Israel’s membership in African Union to be reconsidered soon.
The Algerian Foreign Minister regretted the insistence of some countries on the Zionist regime’s membership in the African Union and said that this issue will be discussed at the next summit.
Algerian Foreign Minister Ramatan Lamara said that the issue of accepting the Zionist regime as an observer member of the African Union would be discussed at a meeting of African Union foreign ministers in Addis Ababa.
The African foreign ministers spent several hours examining the controversial issue raised by Musa Faki, the head of the African Union High Commissioner for Refugees, and noted the deep divisions between the members, Lamara said.
He added that many countries, especially Algeria, opposed this unfortunate and dangerous decision and supported Africa’s highest interest in the unity of its nations.
According to the Algerian newspaper Al-Shorouk, Lamarrah stated that “Unfortunately, the proposal of Nigeria and Algeria to return to the status quo and reject Zionist membership was opposed by some countries, including the Maghreb and its allies, including the Democratic Republic of Congo.”
According to him, the foreign ministers present at the meeting finally agreed to discuss the issue at the summit of African Union member states to be held next February.
Referring to the history of Africa’s struggle against colonialism and racism, he expressed hope that the forthcoming summit would be a turning point for Africa and its history, and would not foster divisions.
