After 32 years; America is making a dangerous nuclear warhead again.
The production of nuclear warheads by the United States will resume after 32 years.
Citing TVP Word, a senior Ukrainian official has stated that the United States plans to resume the production of nuclear warheads soon, citing some security reports of the American government. As announced by “Anton Gerashchenko”, the adviser of the Ministry of Interior of Ukraine, the United States wants to re-produce dangerous nuclear warheads after a 32-year hiatus. Gerashchenko announced this news citing the report of the US National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), which was recently presented to the Congress.
In his Telegram channel, this Ukrainian politician noted this change in American policy and said that the production of nuclear warheads in the United States had stopped since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, which occurred 32 years ago. Also, production of plutonium cores for warheads had ceased in 1989, even before the signing of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START I) between the United States and the Soviet Union in 1991.
However, according to this report, America plans to produce dozens of new nuclear missiles this year. In addition, the Pentagon is considering preventive measures to extend the operational life of the B61-12 nuclear bombs deployed in Europe and to modernize the Trident II ballistic missiles carried by submarines.
According to the report of the US National Nuclear Security Administration and quoted by Gerashchenko, the resumption of the US nuclear program has been approved by US President Joe Biden and is estimated to cost Washington $634 billion by 2031.
Ukraine’s interior ministry adviser has claimed that the change in US nuclear weapons policy is a response to Russia’s actions. In December 2022, Russia departed from its previous doctrine that precluded a nuclear response to similar action by an adversary. Also, at the end of last year, Vladimir Putin announced that Moscow could consider a pre-emptive strike to defend its national security.
On the other hand, in February 2023, the Kremlin withdrew from the New Start Treaty, the last remaining US-Russian strategic nuclear arms limitation agreement at the time. Gerashchenko claimed that in response to this situation, the Pentagon conducted exercises with the presence of its nuclear forces.
“The United States is assessing the situation, which is why they have moved away from diplomatic language in favor of direct warnings,” the Ukrainian government official said.
