After 12 Years Iraqi Prime Minister Steps Foot On Syrian Land.
The official news agency of Iraq (WAA) announced this morning (Sunday) that “Mohammed Shia al-Sudani”, the prime minister of this country, has left Baghdad for Damascus.
The Iraqi News Agency wrote: “Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, the head of the cabinet, has left the capital [Iraq] – Baghdad – for the Syrian Arab Republic on an official trip.”
At the same time as this report, the Syrian newspaper “Al-Watan” reported that the Iraqi Prime Minister will meet and talk with Syrian President “Bashar Assad” during this trip.
This trip takes place while no prime minister from Iraq has visited Syria since 2011. Following the cancellation of the suspension of Syria’s membership in the Arab League and the presence of President Bashar al-Assad at the Arab League summit, Arab countries are returning to normal relations with Damascus one after the other.
The Arab League, in its extraordinary meeting on the 7th of May, which was held at the level of foreign ministers, agreed to lift the suspension of Syria’s membership in the meetings of this league, and in this way, after about 12 years of disconnection between the Arab countries, Syria Damascus returned to its position in the Arab League following the civil war in this country.
The President of Syria also participated in the 32nd meeting of Arab heads of state in Jeddah on May 19th and during this trip, he met and talked with many officials of Arab countries, including Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. This was the first appearance of Syrian officials in an Arab meeting, after the decision of the Arab League to return Damascus to this regional body.
