Abu al-Gheiz’s opinion on Syria’s return to the Arab League.
The Secretary General of the Arab League stated that favorable conditions have not yet been created for Syria to return to this regional institution.
In a press conference after the meeting of the Arab foreign ministers in Kuwait, the Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmad Abu al-Ghaiz, stated the organization’s position on the possibility of Syria’s return.
According to the Arab 21 news website, referring to a consultative meeting between the foreign ministers of the Arab countries, the secretary general of the Arab League said: “The present ministers do not see the possibility of Syria participating in the next meeting of the union and returning membership to Damascus.”
Ahmad Abu al-Ghaiz added: “The issue of returning a government to resume activities or inviting it to attend a meeting requires consultation, ideas and views between members.” It should be clear what the members think and what they expect from that country; We have not yet answered these questions.
The members of the Arab League have not yet reached a consensus on their views and expectations from Syria.
Referring to the Syrian issue during the meeting of the foreign ministers of the Arab countries in general and like the other two crises in Yemen and Libya, he stressed that this meeting is the latest developments in the Arab world, all its problems, as well as regional and global conditions.
These efforts and talks to return Syria to the Arab League are taking place at a time when Arab countries suspended Damascus’s membership in November 2011, coinciding with the start of the internal crisis in Damascus. Syria is one of the founding members of this regional body.
