50 convicted in Congo in connection with the murder of two UN experts.
A Congolese court has sentenced 50 people to life in prison for the murder of two UN experts.
Reuters quoted 50 lawyers as saying that 50 people had been sentenced to death in connection with the murder of two UN experts in the Republic of Congo.
Zeida Catalan and Michelle Sharp were two UN experts who were assassinated in 2017 in the African country of Congo.
Reuters added: “Among those sentenced to death is a Congolese immigration official, and a senior army officer has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.”
Congo has abolished the death penalty since 2003, so most of them are fugitives and face life in prison.
However, Human Rights Watch in the Congo says the court has ignored the role of senior officials in the killing of the two UN experts and has not revealed all the facts.
Swedish-born Zida Catalan and Michel Sharp, an American, were two UN experts investigating tensions between the government and militants in the Congo area of Congo, which were stopped by gunmen on the road in 2017 and then landed. Agriculture was enslaved and executed.
The Congolese government blamed the Kamonia Ansapo militia for the killings, and in an initial investigation ignored the role of government agents in killing them, but later arrested a colonel and several government officials on charges of collaborating with insurgents.
