Russia’s S-500 defense system has been described as a US firearm against covert bombers.
Russian Defense Ministry officials have described the S-500 defense system as a “firearm” against US covert bombers.
Almaz-Anti, the maker of the defense system, calls it a “blow to America’s image.” Russia’s defense industry has reportedly unveiled plans to deploy the first of these air defense systems.
“The first units of the S-500 missile defense system have been deployed in a unit tasked with guarding and defending the airspace of the capital,” a Russian Defense Ministry source told Tass.
The source cited by Dice did not mention any timeframe for the system to become operational and did not specify which military unit would be responsible for delivering the systems to Moscow.
The source added that the second series of S-500 systems that have been produced serially will be delivered to the Russian missile forces in the first half of 2022.
Russia’s Gazette news agency added that the S-500 would be used in conjunction with Pentacle surface-to-air missile systems. Alexei Leonkov, a Russian military expert, has expressed hope that the S-500 will perform well against US covert B-21 bombers.
“The US military relies on stealth B-21 bombers, but they do not take into account that Russia is constantly updating and improving its radars … Russian military radars are capable of detecting B-21 bombers,” he said.
Russia last month announced the completion of testing of its new air defense system, announcing that the S-500 is capable of intercepting intercontinental ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and supersonic missiles.
Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov said on September 27 that Russia had completed testing of its S-500 surface-to-air missile system and had begun supplying it to the armed forces.
The S-500 is a weapon that Moscow hopes will strengthen its defense capabilities and become the best-selling export product. Russia began testing the system last year, and the Russian military has announced that the first S-500 artillery will be deployed around Moscow.
