Macron’s separate contact with Zelensky and Putin reached no agreement.
The French president spoke in separate telephone conversations with the leaders of Russia and Ukraine, but the Elysee Palace reported that no agreement had been reached.
The Elysee Palace announced that French President Emmanuel Macron had held separate telephone conversations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday to discuss the terms of the ceasefire.
The statement added that “no agreement was reached” but that Macron “still believes that it is necessary to continue its efforts to establish a ceasefire”. According to the statement, Macron also said he supported Ukraine against the Russian attack.
The Elysee Palace said in a statement on Tuesday that Macron’s conversation with Putin focused on “the security situation for important issues.”

Russia ordered a military strike on Ukraine on Thursday morning (February 24th). This development came days after Moscow formally recognized the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics in eastern Ukraine.
Russia says Ukraine has not fulfilled its obligations under the Minsk agreements reached in 2014 and 2015 to resolve the dispute between separatists and Kiev. Vladimir Putin says Russia’s military operation is aimed at “demilitarizing Ukraine” and “de-Naziizing” the country.
