Islamabad :
Federal Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed has said that Pakistan wants lasting peace in Afghanistan, the world needs to understand the ground realities in Afghanistan, the Taliban should be given time to form the government and run the affairs of the country. He made the remarks while talking to UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Felpo Grande, who called on him here on Thursday.
During the meeting, issues related to evacuation from Afghanistan and humanitarian assistance to Afghan citizens were discussed. The meeting agreed that Afghan citizens would not be left alone in the current situation and that food, medicine and other essentials would be provided to Afghan citizens on a humanitarian basis. He said the Taliban would have to ensure financial and human resources for governance in Afghanistan. Under a Taliban-led government, Afghanistan cannot develop in a single day like Europe. A potential humanitarian famine in Afghanistan could lead to insecurity and lawlessness.
He said that trucks and ships of food and medicine have been sent to Afghanistan out of humanitarian sympathy. Under the current circumstances, Pakistan will continue to provide humanitarian assistance to Afghan citizens. During the meeting, High Commissioner for Refugees Felpo Grande said that Pakistan’s role in the continuous care of 3 million Afghan refugees is enviable. The United Nations will not leave Afghan citizens alone, it will do everything possible to help them. The United Nations has mobilized the United Nations for funding and assistance to Afghanistan. He said that he was grateful to the Government of Pakistan for providing security and visa facilities to the UN staff.
