There is a possibility of shortage of petroleum products. According to the report of Jang newspaper, due to the dilapidated condition of oil piers in KPT, there is a possibility of shortage of petroleum products across the country. Okek informed about the situation in a letter, while Baiko Refinery has sent a proposal to deal with the situation.
The Oil Companies Advisory Council has sounded the alarm. It has informed the government that the dilapidated condition of oil piers in the Karachi Post Trust could adversely affect the import supply chain of petroleum products, especially crude oil and mogas. As a result, there could be a shortage of crude oil and petrol across the country.
A copy of the letter dated May 25, 2021 to Energy Minister Hamad Azhar and Secretary Petroleum Division Dr. Arshad Mahmood stated that OKEC wanted immediate intervention of the Ministry of Energy at the behest of downstream petroleum companies.
Earlier, it was reported that petrol sales in Pakistan increased by about 15% during May 2021 and reached a record high of 731,000 metric tonnes. Sales of petroleum products rose 14 percent to 1.692 million metric tons during May, officials said, citing a number of factors, including increased economic activity in the country. Of the total sales recorded last month, diesel increased by 11% to 761,000 tonnes and furnace oil by 16% to 168,000 metric tonnes. In the first 11 months of the current financial year, a total of 17.517 million metric tonnes of petroleum products were sold. These include 7.460 million metric tons of petrol, 6.924 million metric tons of diesel and 2.649 million metric tons of furnace oil.
