According to statements issued by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and the Foreign Office, the first consignment of relief goods for the Afghan citizens affected by the rains and floods has been sent to the neighboring country.
Floods in Afghanistan have killed at least 22 people and injured 40 others, destroyed hundreds of homes and damaged thousands of acres of crops.
Expressing solidarity with the people of Afghanistan, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif promised aid to the victims and also promised the international community to provide assistance to the Afghan people.
A statement from the Foreign Office said that in light of the Prime Minister’s instructions, emergency aid had been sent to the Afghan city of Mazar-e-Sharif by C-130 aircraft, which included tents, flour, rice and sugar.
The statement said the other plane was carrying food and accommodation items which were being sent “for the flood victims in good faith”.
The FO added that “Pakistan as a neighboring country is at the forefront of humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people and hopes that the international community will also play an active role in providing timely assistance and financial assistance to the affected citizens of Afghanistan.”
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif also confirmed the delivery of relief goods via Twitter message.
He also informed about further relief measures in the coming days.
The Prime Minister tweeted that “Pakistan stands with its Afghan brothers and sisters in all good times and bad times. The international community should not ignore them when the Afghan people need their help.”
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Afghanistan Mansoor Ahmad Khan tweeted that “Pakistan’s Chief of Staff Saifullah has handed over a consignment of relief items to the Afghan Disaster Management Organization at Mazar-e-Sharif Airport.”
The supplies include tents, food and medicine, he said.
