Islamabad: The federal government appointed Jameel Ahmed as the governor of State Bank of Pakistan for 5 years. The notification issued by the finance division said that Jameel Ahmed was appointed for 5 years with the approval of the President of Pakistan on the recommendation of the federal government. Jameel Ahmed is a seasoned banker with over 26 years of experience, having previously served as the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank.
Federal Finance Minister Miftah Ismail congratulated Jameel Ahmed on his appointment.
The 3-year term of Dr. Raza Baqir, who was appointed to the post before Jameel Ahmed, ended on May 4, after which Dr. Murtaza Syed took over as Acting Governor State Bank.
Jameel Ahmed served as Deputy Governor (Banking and FMRM) of State Bank from 11 April 2017 to 15 October 2018.
Before being appointed as Deputy Governor State Bank, he also served as Group Head of Operations, Banking Policy and Regulations Department, Development Finance Department and Financial Resource Management Department.
He has also worked for the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA).
According to the central bank’s website, he played a significant role in shaping the policy, regulatory framework and financial stability of the banking systems of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
He oversaw the formulation and promulgation of regulations for Electronic Money Institutions in Pakistan.
The newly appointed Governor State Bank also served as the Chairman of the Steering Committees set up for implementation of Instant Payments System, Digital Banking Regulations and State Bank’s Knowledge Management System.
Jameel Ahmed also oversaw the formulation and implementation of Pakistan’s National Payment System Strategy jointly developed by SBP and the World Bank.
Newly appointed Governor State Bank Jameel Ahmed completed his MBA from Punjab University in 1988.
He is a Fellow Member of the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Pakistan since 1994, a Fellow Member of the Institute of Bankers of Pakistan since 1993 and a Fellow Member of the Institute of Corporate Secretaries of Pakistan since 1992.
