Islamabad: The Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Justice Rana Shamim has been indicted in a contempt of court case. The court said that first the individual will be charged then the petitions will be looked into. The court had ordered that the individual will be charged today.
The Chief Justice of the High Court, Athar Minallah, heard the contempt case on the basis of a report based on the allegations against the High Court in an English language journal. At the commencement of the hearing, Justice Athar Minallah told the parties that the court had earlier ordered the indictment, therefore the charges will be framed first and then you will be heard. The court summoned Rana Shamim to the rostrum to indict him. So he said I have filed two new petitions.
The court said that first the indictment will be filed then the petitions will be considered. The court had ordered that the indictment will be filed today. Later, when the hearing resumed, Justice Athar Minallah said that this court has been disrespected. Does anyone have any problem with this court? A statement is being made focusing on this court. Let the case proceed.
The Chief Justice said that what is the statement that the judges of this court are compromised, the court cannot give a license to any questioner to come and disrespect the court in this way Justice Athar Minallah said that you do not even realize that Attempts have been made to influence the case pending, this court believes in open accountability and welcomes it.
He said that from July 2018 till today the order has been placed on which this statement fits? An article in a newspaper is not related to Saqib Nisar but to the Islamabad High Court. The Chief Justice said that people have been told that the judges of this court are compromised. Was fixed, if there was any mistake let us know and we will take action on it.
Meanwhile, Nasir Zaidi of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) asked the court for permission to say something. The court said that you do not need to say anything. Any third party will give a paper and we will print it, what will happen? If such a big newspaper says that they have not taken any legal opinion in this regard, then it would be an abuse.
