ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan rejected the request for recount of votes filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf in the by-election of PP-7 Rawalpindi 2 Punjab Assembly Constituency.
PTI had challenged the by-election of PP-7 Rawalpindi 2 constituency in Punjab citing delay in the election results while there was a slight difference between the votes received by the successful and the second placed candidate.
This decision was pronounced by a 5-member bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja.
In its summary judgment, the Election Commission said that the petitioner had failed to prove any rigging or irregularities during the polling, adding that the petitioner had failed to state the reasons for the recount.
Immediately after the announcement of the decision by the Election Commission, PTI leader Shafqat Mehmood took to Twitter and called the decision against the law.
He said that the elimination of impartiality and integrity on the part of the Election Commission will have far-reaching negative consequences against democracy.
According to the unofficial and inconclusive results, Pakistan Muslim League (N) candidate Raja Saghir won the Punjab Assembly seat by a margin of only 49 votes, while his opponent, PTI candidate retired Colonel Shabbir Awan, was second.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf candidate Shabbir Awan had submitted an application to the Returning Officer (RO) demanding a recount.
He had argued in his petition that the results of the by-elections in other constituencies across Punjab were announced at 7 pm while the result of PP7 was released at 7:40 pm in the Result Transmission System (RTS). The error was justified.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had set up 266 polling stations with 787 polling booths for the by-election process in this constituency for 335 thousand 295 voters.
On the request for recount in the PP-7 by-elections in the Election Commission, the Election Commission rejected PTI’s appeal while pronouncing a reserved decision.
PTI candidate Shabbir Awan had requested recount at 21 polling stations.
PTI had approached the Lahore High Court against the decision of the Returning Officer (RO) and an application was filed in the Election Commission on the order of the High Court.
The Election Commission had reserved its decision during the hearing on the case today after the arguments of the parties were completed.
