Will Barham Saleh become President of Iraq again?
The Patriotic Union of Iraqi Kurdistan reiterated its commitment to Barham Saleh’s candidacy for a second term in office.
The Patriotic Union of Iraqi Kurdistan on Sunday reaffirmed its commitment to Barham Saleh’s candidacy for a second term.
In an exclusive interview with Mawazin News, Shirvan Mirza, a former member of the Patriotic Union in the Iraqi parliament, said that his party had emphasized Barham Saleh’s candidacy for the Iraqi presidency during a meeting of the union’s leadership committee with his counterparts from the Kurdistan Democratic Party.
Mirza said that the Kurdistan Democratic Party also emphasized the conscious candidacy of Zebari for the presidency, and on this account, two candidates will be introduced in the presidential election session.
He added: “Given that, according to him, the presidency is our share, there is still an atmosphere of understanding between the Kurdish parties, especially between the national unity and democratic parties.”
In recent days, however, some political sources have claimed that the Kurdistan Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), after Massoud Barzani, has strongly opposed the candidacy of Barham Saleh for the Iraqi presidency. He will hold a meeting in the next two days.
The Iraqi parliament has stressed that the president must be elected by February 8 at the latest.
According to the Iraqi constitution, one of the conditions for running for the presidency is that he be born in Iraq and have Iraqi parents, be over 40 years old, and have political experience in addition to being loyal to the country.
The new Iraqi parliament has elected Mohammed al-Halbousi as its new speaker in its first controversial session, which has been postponed several times, for the second time in a row.
