Zbigniew Brzezinski, the American national security adviser during Carter’s presidency, in a book called “The Big Chessboard: America’s Absolute Superiority and Geostrategic Needs” has put forward recommendations for the continuation of America’s superior position. Russia in the Ukraine war
International chess
In that book, he mentioned the five countries of France, Germany, Russia, China and India as the main players and considered the other five countries, including Ukraine, Azerbaijan, South Korea, Turkey and Iran, as countries that play a “pivotal role” in the political geography of the world. .
According to Brzezinski, for the first time in history after the collapse of the Soviet Union, we are witnessing a world in which the superior international power is not from Eurasia. It is on this basis that he recommends that the Eurasian powers be controlled in order to continue America’s supremacy. He says that this is possible through the low-cost management of the region known as “Balkan-Eurasia” because this region is the first place where the Eurasian powers want to influence to increase their international power. In fact, America should create and maintain its front line in the closest part to the borders of the competing powers and not allow any of the Eurasian powers, including China, Russia, India, Iran, etc., to gain power in it.
In this book, Brzezinski considers Russia to be the most dangerous power and considers both Russian and Chinese powers as rivals in Eurasia. At a lower level, it describes Ukraine, the Republic of Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan as important small countries that the United States should pit against Russia and China in order to prevent them from dominating Eurasia’s oil, gas, and mineral resources.
The “Balkan-Eurasia” region, which Brzezinski mentions, includes Southwest Europe, Central Asia, the Persian Gulf, the Middle East and parts of South Asia, and it is a circle that, in his opinion, has special conditions, such that it has a power vacuum and As a result, it invites the surrounding powers to intervene, but these surrounding powers, whether Russia, China, or Western governments, do not accept any other influence in this region.
His suggestion to make the most of this situation is to strengthen the instability in this region because it can lead to a decrease in the power of Russia and other Asian powers or at least prevent them from increasing their influence in this region and thus increasing their international power.
The important message of this book is that the era of nation-building by great powers has ended and the interaction of countries with each other in the 21st century is like a chess game. He argues that the rules of the game have changed and the relationship (or competition) of countries with each other is like a chess game in which expertise in the game and access to information and of course relying on economic facilities provide victory. Brzezinski concludes that the potentially most dangerous scenario is a grand coalition of China, Russia, and perhaps Iran.
In this regard, a look at history shows that when the United States became a major international power after World War II, its main strategic goal was to challenge the Eurasian region and prevent the formation of a Eurasian space bound by interests and positive interactions at the level. political and prevented it from dominating what the old world was based on.
This strategy actually means that America has always tried to apply the “divide and rule” policy, this time at the global level, especially in the Eurasian region.
American politicians and intellectuals, from “Brzezinski” to “Brent Scowcroft” (National Security Adviser, during the time of George Bush Sr.) and “Henry Kissinger” have always warned about the closeness of Russia and China and the increase of Moscow’s influence in the Eurasian region.
However, new evidence suggests that what was America’s nightmare is coming true in Ukraine.
