Borrell’s consultation with Imran Khan and Ashraf Ghani on developments in Afghanistan.
On the sidelines of the Tashkent conference, the EU foreign policy chief met separately with the President of Afghanistan and the Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan today to discuss regional challenges and developments in Afghanistan.
EU foreign policy chief Joseph Borrell met separately with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani separately on Friday on the sidelines of a conference on “Central and South Asia: Regional Relations, Challenges and Opportunities” in the Uzbek capital, Tashkent.
“Today was an opportunity for me to meet with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on the sidelines of a regional relations conference,” the EU foreign policy chief said in a message posted on his official Twitter account. We discussed security challenges and the impact of instability in the region. “A peaceful solution to the Afghan issue through negotiations is the only way forward.”
Commenting on his meeting with the President of Afghanistan, Joseph Borrell also wrote on Twitter: “In today’s meeting with President Ashraf Ghani, we stressed the need for coordinated action [in response to developments in Afghanistan]. “The EU strongly supports a comprehensive peace process centered on Afghan groups.”
The International Conference on Central and South Asia: Regional Relations, Challenges and Opportunities kicked off in Tashkent on Friday morning with the participation of Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and Uzbek President Shaukat Mirziyoyev.
The conference is attended by the foreign ministers of Central and South Asia, as well as representatives from 44 countries and 30 international organizations.
