According to the Sputnik Mundo website, Bernardo Arévalo, the president-elect of Guatemala, said in a press conference: “We are witnessing a coup in progress, in which the judicial system is being used to violate justice itself and the will of the people, who are freely expressed in the ballot boxes. Four days after the disqualification of his party (Movimiento Semilla) by the Guatemalan judiciary, Arebalo said: “There is a group of corrupt politicians and officials who refuse to accept this result and have implemented a plan to break the constitutional order and violate democracy.”
The president-elect directly pointed to Attorney General Consuelo Porras and a number of other judicial officials and politicians of this country as agents of the coup. According to Arebalo, the aim of these “corrupt” officials and politicians is to prevent him and the elected vice president from taking office in the recent elections of this country.
Stating that the necessary political and legal measures are being taken to prevent the coup, Arebalo called on all the Guatemalan society to support these measures and prevent the violation of the will of the people.
He stated: We ask all organizations to join us in these actions in these four months (until the inauguration ceremony) and defend the vote and the right of the Guatemalan people to live in a free and democratic society.
Bernardo Arreballo won the second round of the election on August 20 with 60.91% of the votes against his rival Sandra Torres who got 39.09% of the votes. In this way, Arebalo became the first president elected from a leftist movement in more than half a century in this Central American country.
