“BRICS” Summit / Chinese President arrived in South Africa’
According to Sputnik, Chinese media announced that Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Johannesburg, the capital of South Africa, to participate in the 15th BRICS summit, welcomed by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The “BRICS 2023” meeting will begin today Tuesday with the participation of the leaders of the 5 countries of this group, namely Russia, China, India, South Africa and Brazil, and will continue until Thursday.
Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India and Lula da Silva, Xi Jinping, and Cyril Ramaphosa, the presidents of Brazil, China, and South Africa, in person, and Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, in video communication. They attend the meeting.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov published an article in South Africa’s “Ubuntu” magazine yesterday and wrote that BRICS has started becoming one of the pillars of the new world order. Russia continuously cooperates with other countries in the development of BRICS interaction. In particular, one of South Africa’s priorities as the current BRICS chairmanship is to strengthen cooperation with African countries. Russia also fully agrees with this approach.
According to Lavrov, BRICS consists of like-minded countries around the world and is seen as a positive force that can strengthen global solidarity and become one of the pillars of the new world order.
On the eve of the BRICS summit, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced in a statement that the BRICS group supports multilateralism in the world. This statement emphasizes that “the group of BRICS countries is committed to defending multilateralism and reforming the system governing the world. “BRICS is an important platform and framework for cooperation between developing countries.”
Another part of the statement states that “BRICS, as an important platform for cooperation with emerging markets and developing countries, seeks to support pluralism and is working hard to increase the representation of emerging markets and developing countries.”, and strengthen their right to vote, make reforms in the global governance system.
The BRICS group currently consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
The term BRICS is formed by combining the first letter of the English name of these countries. 30% of the gross production and 40% of the world’s population are defined in BRICS.
