Exclusive|Saudi Foreign Minister’s trip to Damascus.
After 12 years of Riyadh’s continuous support to the Syrian opposition during the Syrian crisis and the failure to overthrow the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan’s visit to Damascus ended years of diplomatic ties between the two countries. The visit of the Saudi Foreign Minister to Damascus is considered a big step in the path of restoring Arab relations and returning Syria to the Arab League.
Mohammad Al Jabi, professor of international relations, while explaining the reasons for Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan’s visit to Damascus at the current time, told Tasnim reporter: “Undoubtedly, the visit of the Saudi Foreign Minister carries important messages for Syria and other Arab countries.” Riyadh has already emphasized on the territorial integrity of Syria and supports the solution of the crisis in this country by relying on political solutions.
He further added: I think the Saudi Foreign Minister wants to discuss the road map for restoring relations between Damascus and Arab countries.
After arriving at the Damascus International Airport, Faisal bin Farhan went to the “Al-Sha’ab” palace in Damascus to meet and talk with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
During this meeting, the parties emphasized the importance of cooperation between Damascus and Riyadh and reminded that the former relations between the two countries had brought stability and security in the region for several decades before the start of the crisis in Syria.
Syrian journalist Reza al-Basha said in a conversation with Tasnim reporter in Damascus: The visit of the Saudi Foreign Minister took place after 12 years of hostility between this country and the Syrian nation and government. Saudi Arabia was the main supporter of the terrorist group “Jaish al-Islam” and hoped that these terrorists would capture Damascus.
Al-Basha further stated: Riyadh played a central role in the “MOK” operation room and was trying to remove the southern part of Syria and especially the province of Daraa from the control of the Syrian army. In the north, Saudi Arabia was considered one of the main financial supporters of the “Aleppo” operation room.
However, Faisal bin Farhan’s recent trip shows that Riyadh has fully accepted that political change in Damascus is impossible and they must accept the stabilization of the Syrian regime and the presidency of Bashar al-Assad as an inviolable reality.
