The risk of internal conflicts in the shadow of the water shortage crisis in France.
According to the German Focus magazine, many French people have recently become accustomed to the situation where they have to save electricity, but now water is also scarce in this country. The summer heat and winter drought have worried the country’s authorities. In one small area, even the lack of water has led to violence.
French President Emmanuel Macron recently said that this drought was exceptional compared to previous periods. At the same time, he said: But I am of the opinion that according to expectations, this drought was not exceptional.
Last summer, about 2,000 regions in France suffered from water shortages. About half of them had to deliver water in bottles or by trucks and tankers. Water use is currently restricted in 15 of the country’s 101 districts, for example no cars can be washed or lawns watered. In the south of the country, some mayors are currently denying permission to build private swimming pools.
France has experienced one of the driest winters in more than half a century.
“Emmanuel Macron”, the president of France, has called for saving water throughout the country due to the months of drought in France. Recently, in a speech in the French Alps, he introduced a national water plan with about 50 specific measures and said: Due to climate change, by 2050 we will have about 30 to 40 percent less water than today. That’s why we need to focus on saving water in the long run.
It rained very little in France this winter. According to weather service Météo France, since weather records began in 1959, there has never been such a long period without rain in winter in France. The soils were significantly dry at this time of year.
