Significant increase in housing costs for students in German university cities.
In a report, “Pasayer Neue Perse” newspaper wrote: The latest assessment shows that housing costs for students in German university cities have increased sharply. Especially in two cities, the conditions for students are very bad.
Students looking for a room in a shared apartment in a German university town will have to pay more than last semester, according to a new assessment.
Based on this, the cost of a room for a student is currently 458 euros per month on average, which is 23 euros more than six months ago. This comes from a survey published by the Moses Mendelssohn Institute in collaboration with the real estate portal WG-Gesucht.de. This housing survey was conducted in all 94 university cities in Germany among at least 5000 students.
Accordingly, the situation is particularly bad for those with low incomes. According to the study, a housing allowance of 360 euros is not enough for an average room in 68 German university cities. “There is an urgent need for more financial support for students living away from home,” said Stephen Brockman, CEO of the Moses Mendelsohn Institute. According to him, full salary for a small job with around 520 euros is always needed in more cities to bear the cost of living.
Students in Munich, in particular, have to leave a lot of money on the table: housing costs there have risen again from €700 to €720, according to the study.
In Berlin, almost a third increase can be seen within a year and a half.
