The former national security advisor of the White House said that he plans to run for the 2024 presidential election to prevent Donald Trump from entering the White House again.
The Daily Mail newspaper wrote on Friday that John Bolton, the US national security advisor during the presidency of Donald Trump, announced his intention to compete with his former boss in the upcoming US presidential elections.
Bolton, who was once dubbed “Mr. Tough” by Trump, said he would center his campaign on tougher policies toward Russia and China.
“I’m running to win the [Republican] nomination, and I’m doing it primarily because we need a stronger foreign policy,” Bolton said in an interview Friday.
“I think it’s important not just in Moscow but in places like Beijing to understand that gratuitous aggression against your neighbors is not something that the United States and its allies will tolerate,” he added.
Bolton has been one of the most consistent figures among Republican officials in the past few decades. He was the Assistant Secretary of Justice during Ronald Reagan’s presidency. During the presidency of George Bush Sr., he was the Assistant Secretary of State of the United States, and then he was elected to several positions during Bush Jr.’s presidency.
Bolton served as US National Security Advisor from April 2018 to September 2019 during Trump’s presidency. Bolton was at odds with Trump over Iran and Afghanistan policies until Trump fired him with a tweet.
