Algeria: Syria does not want to take back its seat in the Arab League.
The Foreign Ministry of Algeria reported, quoting the Foreign Minister of Syria, that this country prefers not to raise the issue of restoring its seat in the Arab League at the Arab Summit.
Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtan Lamamareh had a telephone conversation with his Syrian counterpart, Faisal Al-Maqdad, on Sunday evening.
Radio Algiers reported that al-Maqdad said that Syria prefers that the issue of restoring its seat in the Arab League not be discussed at the Arab Summit. The meeting is scheduled to be held in Algeria at the beginning of November.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Algeria emphasized that in order to complete Algeria’s consultations with the Arab countries in order to provide all the conditions for the success of the meeting of Arab leaders, Lamamareh made a phone call with Al-Maqdad and this meeting is scheduled to be held on November 1st and 2nd of next month.
According to this institution, among the issues that were reviewed was the issue of Syria’s relations with the Arab League. The parties also expressed hope that this meeting will have results that can be effective in softening the situation and strengthening the relations of Arab countries.
In this connection, the president of Algeria, Abdel Majid Taboun, recently stated that the upcoming conference of the Arab League will witness the return of Syria to this league.
In response to a question about whether Damascus is likely to attend the upcoming meeting of the Arab League, the Algerian president said: “Syria is supposed to attend.”
Abdul Majid Taboun added: “When we hold an Arab summit, we want it to bring [everyone] together and be a starting point for the unity of the fragmented Arab world… We are a country that always brings parties together.”
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Algeria also stated in this regard: “We said earlier that the time has come for Syria to return to the Arab League and Syria’s seat should be returned [to the Arab League] without interfering in internal affairs. Algeria will not be suspended in any way.” Syria did not agree in the Arab League. We are trying to create an agreement regarding the issue of Syria and the presence of this country in the Arab League. I congratulate the UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs on his visit to Damascus and we hope that this step will help the unity of the Arab countries.
In November 2011, the Arab League decided to suspend the membership of Damascus in November 2011, at the same time as the Syrian crisis flared up. However, since last July, Arab countries, especially Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt, have been trying to normalize relations one after the other. Their relations are with Syria.
