Burrell: Putin is counting on Europeans’ doubts about the war in Ukraine.
The EU foreign policy official claimed that the Russian president counted on Europeans’ reluctance to bear the consequences of the war in Ukraine.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Burrell emphasized that Europe should maintain its unity in confronting Russia.
He went on to say: “Putin is counting on the hesitation of Europeans to bear the consequences of the war in Ukraine.”
Burrell added: “The European Union is a collection of countries that have different approaches to Russia.”
While the military conflicts in Ukraine continue, some mediators, including Turkey and the United Nations, are trying to reduce tension and resolve the political and diplomatic crisis in Ukraine. However, the arms aid of Western countries to Ukraine has caused the escalation of tensions in recent weeks and the conflicts have spread to other regions, including the Crimean Peninsula.
On the other hand, Europeans are preparing for a harsh winter without Russian gas supplies, which is part of the consequences of the war in Ukraine.
Latvians have been adjusting to these conditions since the end of July, when Russia cut off gas supplies to the Baltic Sea nation. They know what to expect in the coming months.
Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands and Poland have also already cut gas supplies from Russia, while other countries have experienced sharp cuts in gas supplies.
Russian gas shipments to Germany via the Nord Stream pipeline will be halted for several days at the end of this month, the second outage this summer.
