Unrest in Germany in case of gas cut; Support for Ukraine depends on the arrival of gas.
Germany’s foreign minister warned on Friday that if the country cannot receive gas, it will not be able to continue supporting Ukraine and the possibility of unrest in Germany will increase.
German Foreign Minister Analena Baerburk warned on Friday about social unrest in Germany if Russian gas exports to the country are cut off.
He said: “If we don’t get the gas turbine, then we won’t get more gas, then we won’t be able to support Ukraine anymore because then we will be busy with popular protests.”
Of course, the German foreign minister corrected his words a little later and said that this was exaggerated and pointed to the high level of support of the German people for sending weapons to Ukraine.
Earlier, “Klaus Müller” from the officials of the German energy department had warned that the country will not survive without Russian gas in the winter.
He went on to say: “While Germany’s gas tanks are almost 65% full and the situation is better compared to last weeks, these reserves are still insufficient to get through the winter without Russian gas.”
The energy official added: “Now it depends more on whether maintenance work on the Nord Stream 1 pipeline will be completed as expected on Thursday.”
At the beginning of last week, Gazprom announced a 10-day shutdown for repairs. The company said in a statement that it does not have any documentation that Siemens can remove the engine of the Portovaya gas turbine from Canada, where the turbine is being repaired, therefore, it will not guarantee the resumption of gas shipments to Europe through its pipelines.
Gazprom’s statement came just hours after the European Union granted concessions to Russia, ruling that sanctioned goods could cross EU territory into Russia’s Kaliningrad region, which lies between EU members Lithuania and Poland.
