Federal Law Minister Nazir Tarar has said that the right of overseas Pakistanis to vote has not been abolished. Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Federal Minister for Law Nazir Tarar said that Overseas Pakistanis are our asset and migrants play an important role in economic development.
He said that it was the job of the Election Commission to hold elections and work out the modalities.
He said that the PTI’s Electoral Reforms Bill Committee had rejected it by a majority vote. The PTI had hastily passed the bill. The then opposition had asked for the opinion of all parties. The bill to end the use of EVMs was passed in the National Assembly.
The National Assembly approved it by a majority vote. The previous government’s amendment on electronic voting machines and overseas voting was scrapped. Prime Minister Nazir Tarar has said that the previous government did not take all parties into confidence regarding EVMs. Speaking in the National Assembly, he said that political parties had reservations about electronic voting machines and The previous government did not take all parties into confidence regarding EVM.
He said that it was not possible to hold elections on the same day all over the country through EVM. The bill was passed by the National Assembly. Azam Nazir Tarar said that when the bill came in the Senate, it was sent to the committee and we held many meetings for it but it was passed by bulldozing the rules. ۔
There is room for improvement in the law. He said that there was some shortcoming in the 2018 elections which needs to be rectified. The Law Minister said that no one can deprive the overseas Pakistanis of their right to vote and Rumor has it about us that maybe we are not in favor of overseas voting. We are not against EVM and technology, we are just afraid that anything can happen when RTS can sit.
