Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has sent a summary to the President of Pakistan to appoint MQM Pakistan leader Nasreen Jalil as the new Governor of Sindh.
Muttahida Qaumi Moment (MQM) Pakistan had proposed five names for the post of Governor of Sindh to the Prime Minister, including Nasreen Jalil, Aamir Khan, Amir Chishti, Wasim Akhtar and Kishore Zehra.
It is to be noted that if the summary is approved by the President, Nasreen Jalil will be the first female Governor of Sindh after almost half a century.
Before him, Rana Liaquat Ali Khan, wife of the late Liaquat Ali Khan, the first Prime Minister of Pakistan, was the Governor of Sindh from 1973 to 1975.
Nasreen Jalil’s political background
Nasreen Jalil’s political identity has been MQM from the beginning till today. Nasreen Jalil was born in Lahore but she spent most of her life in Karachi. She spent her early life in London with her siblings for education. Went to Paris too, that’s why besides English and Urdu, I also have a good command of French.
Nasreen Jalil was twice elected a member of the Senate. In 2002, Nasreen Jalil contested the general election from NA-250 but could not win. However, she won the Senate election in 2012.
Nasreen Jalil became the chairperson of the Senate Human Rights Committee for the first time in 1994 and again for the second time in 2012 and in that capacity she worked hard for the parliamentary platform especially for women’s rights.
She has also been the MQM’s deputy convener and chairperson of several Senate committees, including on economic and finance revenue and privatization.
When the operation against MQM started in Karachi, Nasreen Jalil was also arrested, sentenced to 3 years and sent to jail, after which she was kept under house arrest after 6 months of captivity.
