West’s proposal to hold Libya general elections in mid-2023.
Libyan sources have revealed details of the Western proposal for a Libyan general election in mid-2023.
Libyan sources report a proposal in some Lebanese political circles to hold elections in the next half of the year; Some Libyan factions, including the House of Representatives and the Libyan Supreme Council, oppose the proposal.
According to Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed, the proposal, put forward by a Western country and welcomed by European capitals, suspends all current political institutions and appoints the head of the Supreme Court as caretaker prime minister. This measure will pave the way for general elections until June of next year (June 1402) and will be responsible for managing services and conducting business affairs.
As the UN adviser, Stephanie Williams, seeks to establish a constitutional basis for Libya’s elections before June (when the term of the National Unity Government and the Presidential Council ends), Western capitals are making contact, the sources said. They have intensified with the Libyan side to move the situation towards the acceptance of the Prime Minister of the Supreme Court until the elections.
One of the details of the proposal is for the President of the Libyan Supreme Court to suspend the work of the House of Representatives and the Supreme Council, the Presidential Council, the Government of National Unity and the new government appointed by the House of Representatives.
According to Libyan sources, there are rumors about an attempt to oust Supreme Court President Mohammad Al-Hafi and nominate him as the new head of the Supreme Judicial Council.
Meanwhile, the sources reported that the proposal was strongly opposed by Parliament Speaker Aqila Saleh, as well as prominent figures in the Supreme Council, and that Parliament was sending representatives to attend meetings of the Joint Constitutional Committee in Tunisia under the auspices of the organization. The nations procrastinate.
