An American media outlet has claimed that a number of US officials in the Donald Trump administration who were involved in the decision to assassinate General Qassem Soleimani, the former commander of the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, have been placed under strict protection.
According to the CBS news website, the media has obtained two reports submitted by the US State Department to Congress in January 2022. The reports cited “serious and credible threats” to the lives of former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Brian Hook, a former US government envoy to Iran.
CBS writes that the confidential assessments show that the US State Department has been emphasizing the need for 24-hour protection of the two former US officials throughout 2021, as well as in 2022.
The heavy support for Mike Pompeo, who is likely to be one of the Republican candidates in the 2024 presidential election, is evident in his presence at various meetings and has attracted attention. According to CBS, Pompeo’s protection is equivalent to the protection of a government official.
In a recent State Department report assessing such threats, Undersecretary of State Brian McCawan claimed to have identified threats against Pompeo and Brian Hook on several occasions.
