Anwar Gargash explains Abu Dhabi’s position on the Ukraine crisis
Explaining his country’s position on the current crisis in Ukraine, the UAE President’s Diplomatic Adviser stressed that support for either side in the conflict would lead to more violence.
Explaining his country’s position on the Ukraine crisis and Russia’s attack on the country, Anwar Gargash, the UAE president’s diplomatic adviser, stressed that the UAE believes that “aligning itself with one side in the Ukraine crisis” will lead to more violence.
“The world is facing a difficult test and severe polarization imposed by the Ukraine crisis, which threatens the foundations of the international community and increases the causes of instability,” the Emirati official wrote in a Twitter post. “Given our experience in a crisis-ridden region, we believe that political solutions and balancing enhance security and stability, and are the best way to deal with crises and limit their effects.”
“The UAE’s position is based on the basic principles of the United Nations, international law, the sovereignty of countries and the rejection of military solutions,” he added. “We believe that alignment and taking a stand will only lead to more violence, and in the Ukraine crisis the priorities are to encourage all parties to engage in diplomacy and negotiate a political solution to end this crisis.”
Abu Dhabi voted unanimously in favor of a UN resolution condemning Russia’s military action in Ukraine [despite Moscow’s veto] at a Security Council meeting last Friday.
Lana Nasibeh, the UAE’s representative to the United Nations, issued a statement entitled “Explaining the UAE’s vote in the Security Council”, stressing that the UAE welcomes the immediate cessation of violence and hostile acts and the resumption of talks and humanitarian aid, and called on all parties to: Respect international and humanitarian law and protect the lives of civilians.
