Widespread cyber attack on Ukrainian government websites.
The Ministry of Education of Ukraine announced that a large number of Ukrainian government websites have been taken down as a result of a widespread cyber attack on the country’s Internet infrastructure.
Ukrainian media reported this morning (Friday) that there was a widespread cyber attack on government websites.
According to Sky News, a number of Ukrainian government websites have been shut down in the wake of the cyber attack, and some of them have received warnings on the front page and the image of the Ukrainian flag has been deleted.
“There has been a widespread cyber attack on government websites, including the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and State of Emergency,” the Ukrainian Ministry of Education said in a statement.
While some Western media outlets tried to link the attack to Russia, the Ukrainian Ministry of Education acknowledged that a Ukrainian extremist group had claimed responsibility for the attack.
“The websites of the Ukrainian Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Agriculture and Education were among those that crashed, and some were replaced with messages in Russian, Polish and Ukrainian,” Bloomberg News reported.
According to Bloomberg, the messages read: “Ukrainians! All your personal information is uploaded to the public network. All information on your computer is being erased and will not be recoverable. “All the information about you has been made public, be afraid and expect the worst.”
A Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman also said on Twitter that government websites had been shut down following the widespread cyber attack and that authorities were working to restore services.
Last night, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan backed down from recent accusations against Russia of plotting to invade Ukraine.
