France fined Google and Facebook.
France has fined Facebook and Google a total of more than $ 236 million for violating French law.
France fined Google and Facebook on Thursday, ordering them to make it as easy for users to reject cookies as they are to accept them.
The National Commission on Informatics and Freedom, France’s main body tasked with protecting the confidentiality of users’ information, owed Google more than $ 169 million and Facebook more than $ 67 million for violating the French Data Protection Act. Fined.
The commission said the two companies were offering a button to users that would allow them to accept cookies immediately, with no equivalent option for rejecting them.
“In order for users to reject all cookies, they must click several times, while with just one click, they can accept them all,” the National Information and Freedom Commission said in a statement.
In addition to fining the two companies, the commission asked the French users to provide a way for them to reject the cookies as easily as they accept them.
If Facebook and Google do not heed the request of the National Informatics Commission, they will be fined about 113 thousand dollars per day.
Google and Facebook have issued separate statements in response to France’s action, but neither has given any details on whether they intend to follow the commission.
