Attorney General: “We will punish anyone involved in the attack on Congress.”
Emphasizing the punishment of all perpetrators of the attack on the Congress building last year, the US Secretary of Justice said that they are also investigating violent threats against law enforcement officers.
US Secretary of Justice and Attorney General Mrick Garland on Thursday morning vowed to prosecute and punish anyone involved in last year’s deadly attack on the Congress building.
“The Department of Justice is committed to holding all Jan. 6 perpetrators accountable at all levels, according to the law – whether those present or not,” Garland said, noting that the Justice Department’s work in this area has not yet been completed. “They were criminally responsible for the attack.”
According to Reuters, the US Attorney General has charged more than 725 people with crimes related to the attack on the US Congress building, from riots and riots to police attacks and conspiracies against the US regime. Of those, about 165 have pleaded guilty and at least 70 have been convicted so far.
“We will pursue the facts wherever they lead,” said the US Secretary of Justice, who is also the attorney general. “The Ministry of Justice has issued more than 5,000 subpoenas, confiscated about 2,000 electronic devices, and reviewed more than 20,000 hours of video footage, and the work is ongoing.”
“I understand that this may not be the answer that some are seeking,” Garland was quoted as saying, referring to the implicit request of a large section of American Democrats to severely punish congressmen. “But we talk through our work.”
According to Reuters, he stressed the ministry’s commitment to investigating violent threats against election workers, lawmakers, judges, airline crews, school board officials and journalists.
The US Secretary of Justice said the threat of violence “has permeated many areas of our lives that threaten to normalize them”.
On the eve of the anniversary of the deadly attack on the US Congress, about 57% of Americans said in a poll that they expect more events similar to what happened on January 6, 2020 in the next few years.
The attack by Trump supporters on the US Congress building marked his second congressional impeachment.
