There is no objection to Russia’s attempt to play a role in an agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
Newsweek claims that Russia is trying to reach an agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia in the form of a security agreement in the Persian Gulf.
An American media outlet claims that Russia is trying to reach an agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia in the form of a Persian Gulf security agreement.
According to Newsweek, Russia’s efforts are part of an initiative called the “Collective Security Program in the Persian Gulf.” Moscow updated and presented this plan in 2019.
Newsweek writes that the administration of US President Joe Biden does not oppose the plan, and that Moscow sees it as an opportunity to advance it on a common ground with the United States.
Vitaly Navkin, a researcher who also co-authored the “Collective Security Program in the Persian Gulf” and is currently chairing the Institute for Oriental Studies at the Russian Institute of Science, talks about the common interests of the United States and Russia in advancing the project. “We have a common threat, and that is the threat of war. “Neither the United States nor Russia is interested in this war.”
An unnamed State Department spokesman told Newsweek: “We stand ready to work with Moscow in areas where the two sides share common interests while opposing Russian anti-US policies.”
“At the same time, we are in close contact and consultation with our allies in the Gulf on issues related to US national security, the fight against terrorism, defense cooperation, and regional security,” the State Department spokesman said.
In an effort to advance Russia’s plan, Navkin recently hosted a closed-door meeting with Russian experts. He says the aim of the conference is to launch a step-by-step plan to move towards establishing a new mechanism for establishing security in the Persian Gulf.
One of the main axes of the Collective Security Program in the Persian Gulf is the establishment of a strong mechanism to de-escalate tensions between the countries bordering the Persian Gulf through credible measures such as rejecting military action and respecting domestic issues.
