Sweden’s first female prime minister has resigned.
Sweden’s first female prime minister, Magdalena Anderson, was forced to resign just hours after her historic appointment.
Sweden’s newly elected prime minister, Magdalena Anderson, resigned on Wednesday, just hours after her appointment, when her Green coalition partner ousted the government.
According to Bloomberg, Sweden’s first female prime minister had the worst possible start to her tenure.
“I have told the speaker that I want to resign as prime minister,” Anderson told reporters at a news conference. He added, however, that he was ready to try again as the leader of a one-party state.
The resignation came as the Green Party, a small ally of Anderson’s Social Democrats, said it would not be part of his government to be forced to implement the 2022 budget amended by the opposition.
Earlier this month, Stephen Lufon resigned as Sweden’s prime minister due to his low popularity. The party needs a new leader before next year’s elections, he said.
In 2014, Anderson took over as finance minister, the first time a woman had been appointed to the post in Sweden.
