Danny Fenster’s lawyer, Yangon, told AFP that his client had been detained in May while leaving Myanmar. He is currently facing two charges in connection with Article 50-a of the Anti-Terrorism Law and Article 124-a of the Penal Code.
Conviction under the anti-terrorism law will face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. The trial is set to begin on November 16. Mr. Fenster, 37, worked for a local media outlet called Frantier Myanmar and was arrested while leaving Myanmar.
He is currently on trial for inciting dissent against Myanmar’s military government, participating in illegal gatherings and violating immigration law.
The new charges against the American prisoner came days after US diplomat Bill Richardson met with Ming Aung Hlang, Myanmar’s army chief and military chief. Richardson has previously negotiated the release of some US prisoners in North Korea, Cuba, Iraq and Sudan.
Myanmar has been in a state of unrest since the February military coup, with more than 1,200 people killed in unrest and violence.
