Referring to the Arab League’s partisan mediation in the Lebanon-Saudi crisis, Atwan stressed that the union is behaving as if it were part of the Gulf Cooperation Council and not representing 22 Arab countries.
According to Sach News News, the fruitless visit of “Hussam Zaki”, the Deputy Secretary General of the Arab League to Beirut to resolve the crisis between Lebanon and Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries, as well as his biased positions, raised many questions about the role of the Arab League. It creates issues for the Arab countries as well as the positions of this union against different countries in the Arab world.
“Abdul Bari Atwan, a leading analyst in the Arab world and editor-in-chief of the Rai Al-Youm newspaper, wrote in a note that Mr. Hussam Zaki, the Arab League’s deputy secretary general, mediated to resolve the crisis between Lebanon and Saudi Arabia and three other Gulf states. Lebanese media minister George Qardahi on the Yemeni war, as well as Saudi Arabia’s accusations against Hezbollah, shows that Arab League officials are in fact “cavemen” and behave as if the Arab League is part of the GCC, not an organization. Which must represent 22 Arab countries.
Atwan added, “We do not know why the Secretary General of the Arab League, Mr. Ahmad Abul Gheit, did not personally mediate in this matter instead of sending his deputy to Beirut.” However, the issue of the crisis between Lebanon and the Gulf states is a controversial issue that is of great importance and raises concerns about Arab actions and why the Arab League is only involved in issues related to the Gulf states. And regardless of the Palestinian issue, it ignores other issues, such as the crisis between Algeria and Morocco, which has put the two countries on the brink of war.
