Emmanuel Macron: Australian Prime Minister is lying.
On the sidelines of the G20 summit in Italy, the French president once again spoke about the actions of Washington and London in bypassing Paris in selling submarines to Australia.
Speaking to Australian reporters at the G20 summit, Emmanuel Macron spoke of tensions between the two countries over the cancellation of the $ 90 billion submarine deal, saying the Australian prime minister was lying.
According to the Guardian, the French president made an impromptu statement to Australian reporters on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Rome, saying that he had “a lot of respect” for Australia and its people, but that respect between the two countries should be mutual.
“I’m just saying that when you (respect each other) respect each other, you have to be honest and act accordingly,” said Emmanuel Macron, reiterating his criticism of Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and his government over the cancellation of the deal with France.
An Australian journalist asked the French president if he thought Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison had lied to France.
“I do not think (that Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison lied) but I know (that he did),” French President Emmanuel Macron replied.
The Australian Prime Minister, who has repeatedly spoken about the reason for the cancellation of the submarine sale agreement with France, spoke about it again on the sidelines of the G20 summit.
Rejecting any lies to France, Scott Morrison claimed in Rome on Sunday that he had told Emmanuel Macron that French submarines did not meet Australia’s strategic needs.
According to Morrison, he and Macron met after the 2021 (this year) G7 summit in Paris and had dinner at the Elysee Palace.
The Australian prime minister has previously said that French submarines are useless and that US-British nuclear submarines are a better alternative.
France has previously summoned ambassadors from Canberra to consult with the United States and Australia over the cancellation of a Canberra deal with Paris.
