Explosion at a Turkish nuclear power plant under construction.
Turkish media reported on Sunday evening that a fire had broken out at the Aguquio nuclear power plant in Mersin province following the explosion of an electrical transformer at the facility.
“The explosion of a power transformer at a nuclear power plant under construction in Turkey created frightening moments for the employees and residents of the surrounding areas,” Jomhuriyet newspaper reported today (Monday), quoting the contractor company as saying that no one was injured.
According to the report, the contractor of the Aqquio nuclear power plant, in a statement issued today regarding the fire yesterday, said that the fire was caused by lightning that hit the power transmission line near the fire control panel.
The statement said: “On October 31, 2021, we received an immediate warning that a fire had broken out in the auxiliary post area of the nuclear power plant site as a result of a lightning strike on the power transmission line. “The fire was first contained and then completely extinguished by firefighters who were immediately on the scene.”
“As a result of this incident, no one was injured,” the Turkish company explained, according to the Republic. All units quickly performed tasks related to the nuclear response site emergency response method. “The lightning damaged the infrastructure of the power lines in the post area, but the electricity was returned to the facility and all construction work on the site continues as usual.”
Earlier, on January 19, the governor of the Buyukjali district said that the waves created by the controlled explosions at the plant had damaged residential units around the facility.
