Do Turkish and Syrian intelligence chiefs meet in Baghdad?
“There will be a historic meeting in Baghdad between Hakan Fidan, the head of the Turkish intelligence service (MIT), and Ali Mamluk, the head of the Syrian security service,” Turkey reported, referring to developments in Turkish-Syrian relations.
“Iraqi security sources have also confirmed the news,” the report said. This meeting will take place in the near future and important issues are on the agenda. Former Turkish Army Chief of Staff Ismail Hagi Pekin also said that the meeting could be the beginning of a new process (in Turkish-Syrian relations). If the process continues with Hakan Fidan at the security level, political and diplomatic channels will be reactivated in the next stages and a new era will begin.
Beijing also said about the most important axes of a possible meeting between Mamluk and Fidan: PKK and immigrants will be among the most important axes. The issues of Idlib and Daraa are also among the other topics to be discussed and a roadmap set for it.
He reminded that this trend should be followed for Saudi Arabia, UAE and Egypt.
Ali Mamluk and Hakan Fidan last met in Moscow in 2020 and have not met since.
The beginning of these meetings can have a great impact on the developments in Syria.
In recent months, Turkey has made great efforts to improve relations with countries such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Greece in order to improve cold and sometimes hostile relations with them. Meetings between Egyptian and UAE officials in recent weeks are in the same context.
